Decrease In Band Kids

Band at Payson Seymour starts in the 5th grade and stays around the same numbers until 6th grade. Then when they hit Jr. High the numbers dramatically decrease. The reasons Mr. Bowman(our band and chorus instructor)thinks it is such a dramatic decrease are:

1.More choice of classes you can pick from Agriculture, Art, Keyboarding, and Home Economics.

2.Kids are not as interested in music because in grade school you had 3 choices band, guitar,or chorus.

Mr. Bowman believes his numbers will go up because he has been with this group of kids all the way through from sixth grade. It is also a rather large class so that should help to.

Well, another reason that there is a lot of decrease is that people think that once you get in Jr. High band it won't be fun anymore or something. Come on people! If you're in marching band, for example, in the summer, then you get to go to places like Liberty, Griggsville, Beardstown, etc... You also get to play while walking in the parade. Many of the high school kids are also there. You get to hang out with them, too.
As I said, band itself can also be a lot of fun. Mr. Bowman gives us fun pieces to play and we sometimes get to either 'steal' pieces from the high schoolers or sixth graders, or we get to record a piece for the sixth grade that they are going to play. Here's what we're playing currently:

A Rockin' Halloween (a mix of Scooby-Doo, Ghostbusters, and Werewolves of London)

The Magnificent Seven Theme

All the Small Things

You know, if you really get into it, what ever you start can be quite fun.

I really hope that we will get more marching band members, as well. We need them badly. Most of the M. band is made up of highschoolers. And guess what? About 4 of them are graduates!!! We hardly have enough to even look good... HELP!!!!

but enough of the doom and gloom, I do think that the new seventh graders will help a lot next year.

as we marchers are wont to say -
'We came, we were small, but we rocked 'em all!!!'
